Innovotech offers a suite of ASTM standard test methods to evaluate the antimicrobial properties of surfaces, polymeric materials, wound dressings, and device coatings. All testing is performed in our ISO 17025:2017 accredited laboratory by experienced microbiologists.

  Antimicrobial Surface Testing  

ASTM E2180-24

Standard Test Method for Determining the Activity of Incorporated Antimicrobial Agent(s) In Polymeric or Hydrophobic Materials

This method evaluates the antimicrobial activity of agents incorporated into polymeric or hydrophobic materials using an agar slurry inoculation model. Innovotech has tested strong biofilm model performance with this approach. Microbial recovery increases progressively over time (0 < 4 < 24 hours), confirming biofilm maturation and testing the system for antimicrobial surface evaluation.

  • Sample size: 3 cm × 3 cm coupons (9 cm²) inoculated with 1 mL of agar slurry
  • Model: Agar slurry biofilm inoculation for progressive biofilm maturation and even contact of the inoculum with test surface
  • Output: Quantitative log reduction data comparing treated vs. control samples
  • Application: Polymeric materials, and hydrophobic surfaces with or without antimicrobial coatings

  Contact Transfer Testing  

ASTM E3285-22

Standard Test Method for Evaluation of Contact-Mediated Microbial Transference

This method quantifies microbial transfers between surfaces via contact, a critical measure for high-touch materials, device housings, and antimicrobial surface treatments. Innovotech has developed an effective model for comparing contact-mediated microbial transfer across different substrates (e.g., glass, Teflon, resin) and between surfaces of the same material with different textures or coatings.

  • Primary organism: Staphylococcus aureus (other organisms available upon request)
  • Output: Microbial transfer quantified as Log₁₀ CFU/Device
  • Comparison capability: Surfaces with different textures, coatings, or treatments
  • Samples: Client-supplied samples accepted
  • Model: Tested on agar surfaces
  • Application: Touch‑transfer microbial contamination testing on plastics, coatings

  Wound Dressing Testing  

ASTM E3383

Standard Test Method for Determining the Microbial Barrier Properties of Wound Dressings — In Vitro Wound Model

This method assesses the ability of wound dressings to act as a physical microbial barrier using an in vitro wound model (agar surface). Innovotech has demonstrated its utility for evaluating wound dressings against a range of clinically relevant organisms, including bacteria and fungi.

  • Model: Agar surface mimicking in vitro wound environment
  • Organisms tested: Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida albicans
  • Controls included: Viability control, negative control, positive control, and test article. Allows testing of various bandage sizes
  • Output: Pass/fail barrier assessment with full control verification

  Antimicrobial Surface Testing  

ASTM E3371-22

Standard Test Method for Measuring the Ability of a Synthetic Polymeric Material to Resist Bacterial Adherence

This method evaluates biofilm formation and recovery on polymeric material surfaces — essential for demonstrating anti-adherence or anti-biofilm claims on medical devices and implant materials. Innovotech has established capability to run this method, achieving measurable differentiation between material types.

  • Organisims tested: Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Available for use.
  • Reference materials tested: Plastic and polymeric surfaces (Polypropylene etc), Coatings & Surface Treatments, Medical device plastics (catheters, housings), Hospital surface coatings, and Food‑contact plastic surfaces
